This carpet was crafted in Qum in central Persia where such carpets were first made in the 1930s. Qum is known for its very finely knotted rugs and carpets in complex Persian medallion, arabesque and palmette styles on light grounds were the favourite approach. Qum rugs are among the finest rugs in the world. This is a good example of such a rug and the quality of this rug is particularly high. In the past and at present, Qum is one of the most important centres for producing silk, Kourk wool and silk inlaid carpets. Weavers in Qum use Persian knots and average around 600 knots per square inch. The majority are small, very fine, and beautiful. The patterns are usually curvilinear, as in this rug.
