Goravan is a small village in the Heriz district of East Azerbaijan in Iran, not far from Tabriz. Weaving there goes back generations, basically a family craft, with skills passed down through the long winters. What sets Goravans apart is that bold architectural geometry, a strong central medallion, angular leaves, bold rosettes, designs that feel grounded and balanced. Colors usually include madder reds, deep indigo blues, ivory, beige, camel, and soft sky blue. In older pieces, all from natural dyes. Madder root for reds, indigo for blues, walnut husk for browns. They’re woven with a strong wool pile on cotton foundations, built for daily life and meant to last for generations. That’s why antique Goravans still hold up beautifully today.
